Given that I do not like bugs, this put me on edge. As in, I immediately stopped loading the machine and carefully peered up at the ceiling, checking near the light to see if some monstrous fly was circling up there, mistaking the bulb for the sun.

Today, I did a load of laundry, and as I was heaping clothes into the washing machine, I suddenly heard a buzzing sound. An insect buzzing sound. Then the buzz sounded again, and I realized it wasn’t coming from the dryer – it was coming from the wall. Or, rather, the other side of the wall. Which is, of course, outside.

The buzzing sounded again – and the source was clearly moving back and forth – and I thought it might be coming from the laundry machines themselves. This seemed absurd, until I realized that the dryer is connected to the outside world through a vent, and it was possible that there was a hole in the screen that covers the vent’s opening, and so outside wasn’t really being kept outside anymore, and some horrible buzzy thing had found its way up the vent and into the dryer. I spent a few moments peering through the window on the dryer door. I didn’t want to open the dryer to look – that would be inviting catastrophe right into my face if there was indeed an angry stingy bug in there.
